If starting a franchise, which coach would you want?

The NFL currently has plenty of great coaches. If currently starting an NFL franchise, which coach would you want?

That was the subject of a PFT Live draft on Monday’s edition of the show. Chris Simms and yours truly took turns, filling out three rounds.

So emerged with the better trio of coaches? Check out the video and share your thoughts below.

You can also cast a ballot in the PFT Twitter poll, where I currently could use all the help I can get. Because, apparently, plenty of the voters want to start a franchise with a couple of coaches who are pushing 70.

Since then, his production has dipped a good deal. Despite that lengthy playoff run in 2016, Jones owns a .778 playoff high-danger save percentage. Not great. New Jersey’s Schneider has been in a serious funk since returning from injury, and Kinkaid isn’t the guy I’d want to rely on in a seven-game series. Both candidates have disappointing numbers (neither breaks .915 at even strength or .799 in high-danger situations). Goaltending could be a big factor for both of these teams.

The Patriots waived him out of the preseason, and the Jets claimed him off waivers.

He played 15 games for the Jets with four starts last season, making 14 tackles, a sack and an interception.

J.A. Happ (L), 57 percent, Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles: It’s early, so you can always rebound from an early-week mishap, but if you anticipate a close battle in ratios, not starting this southpaw against the righty-heavy Orioles is certainly defensible as a strategy.

For some, churning is difficult. Blake Parker is certainly a better pitcher than he has demonstrated to date. He’ll bounce back and perhaps even regain the closer gig in Anaheim. But, for now, Kenyan Middleton looks like the guy to target.

GS is the projected game score for the pitcher. The “*” symbol means the pitcher lacks requisite career major league data to produce an accurate rating; these are the author’s ratings.flames_019

Heat top Celtics 104-98, snap Boston’s 16-game win streak

Goran Dragic scored 27 points, Dion Waiters had 26 with a pair of big 3-pointers in the final minutes and the Miami Heat held on to beat Boston 104-98 on Wednesday night, snapping the Celtics’ 16-game winning streak.

Perine carried 23 times for 117 yards, including his 1-yard TD.

Saints: Lattimore tried to return for the first defensive series of the second half, but came off the field soon after and went to the locker room. Defensive end Alex Okafor needed help off the field, favoring his left leg, in the fourth quarter.

I could feel him next to me and I could hear him saying, like, ‘Let me take it, let me take it.’ The minute I got it, I could feel him there and I just handed it to him, both of us recognizing that he’ll take the hit for both of us. That’s why you love Rob. He’s a teammate in every sense of the word and wants to win and is willing to put it on the line for the group.”

“Whoever was anonymous, whoever said it is a coward, flat out,” defensive tackle Damon Harrison told SNY.tv. “I mean, if you’re not man enough to put your name behind something that you feel because that hasn’t been echoed to anybody in this locker room бн I mean, we could have talked it out if you feel that way. It could have went differently.

“For a guy to go through that, to have those emotions, to go the whole night before not sleeping very much and then to come out there and have some very pivotal plays in that game and make a huge difference, it says a lot about the guy,” Shanahan said. “And regardless of whether he played good or bad, the fact that he was out there and tried his hardest and tried to help us was the most important (thing).”

Momentum to delay the deal has dissipated “meaningfully,” in the estimation of one league source.

The Giants were missing two key starters. WR Sterling Shepard was out after having a career game against San Francisco, making 11 catches for 142 yards. He was added to the injury report Saturday with an illness and could not play. CB Eli Apple was at home with his mother, who had brain surgery on Thursday. “He’s My best friend, my nurse and part time ninja,” Annie Apple tweeted Sunday morning. …Thanks for being my side every step of the way.”

Someone else who will probably be a lot more involved is Tavon Austin, the fifth-year Rams receiver who has been used mainly as a backfield decoy and had only two offensive snaps on Sunday.

Jones also has been upset with how the league handled Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension for violating the personal conduct policy, even though the Cowboys running back was not charged by authorities in Columbus, Ohio, who investigated allegations of domestic violence by a former girlfriend.

According to ESPN.com, several players said Elway’s comments were a topic in their meetings Saturday night. Then Sunday afternoon … another loss.

And then … the topic between Broncos players and reporters (via The Denver Post) was that four-letter word: S-O-F-T.

The Dodgers have a sneakily interesting offseason at hand. The roster should get younger with the departure of a few veteran free agents, all of which should be fairly easy to replace, except for starter Yu Darvish and reliever Brandon Morrow. L.A. can let them all walk, add no one and still be a heavy favorite to yet again win the NL West. But do the Dodgers get aggressive this winter, or do they wait until next July to see what, if any, areas have sprung a leak?

He has yet to score a touchdown this season and has the most rushing attempts for a player yet to find the end zone.

Ajayi has rushed 138 times for 465 yards (3.4 average) over seven games for the Dolphins this season. He is coming off a big 2016 campaign in which he racked up more than 1,200 yards (4.9 per carry) with eight touchdowns.

The Dolphins are the first team since the 2013 Rams without a rushing touchdown in their first seven games, and the team’s streak of eight games without a rushing touchdown is a franchise record.

A crowd of 18,997 came for Ball. So did Beverley. Johnson warned his protégé about the Clippers’ Doberman Pinscher, comparing him to Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green. “Beverley plays mind games,” Johnson said. “You’ve got to stay strong.” Out of the Clips’ pre-game huddle, Beverley hopped and hollered like a Miami defensive back, eyes fixed on his mark.

Spavital, second-year O-Line coach Joe Wickline and Holgorsen last worked together back in 2010, when the Cowboys had the Big 12’s most prolific offense. “I feel like Gundy, and I’m sure Jake feels like me [when he was Gundy’s OC],” Holgorsen says. “I’m comfortable doing it. I feel like I’m managing things better, focusing on game management, time management, recruiting more, doing all of the personnel decisions, working with all the special teams.”

No league has a deeper pool of gifted quarterbacks than the Pac-12, but the guy making the best run for first team all-conference honors was completely off the radar in September as all the hype was heaped on Sam Darnold (USC), Josh Rosen (UCLA), Luke Falk (Washington State) and Jake Browning (Washington). Even Oregon’s Justin Herbert generated some strong buzz in September. But everything has changed over the course of a month for Arizona’s Khalil Tate.flames_013

Sorry, but Deshaun Watson, Carson Wentz wouldn’t be this good with Browns

Every time Deshaun Watson puts up video game-like stats for the Texans and Carson Wentz delivers a win for the Eagles, it happens.

While Watson and Wentz are looking like long-term franchise quarterbacks in the NFL, everybody keeps bringing up the team that traded out of its opportunity to draft either QB — the Browns.

Uninterrupted has a 13-minute documentary on suspended Browns receiver Josh Gordon’s drug use and attempted rehab. Gordon begins by listing some of the substances he has abused—alcohol, Xanax, cocaine, marijuana, codeine, cough syrup, and methazine. Cleveland.com rounded up some moving takeaways from the piece.

An endorsement for those in deeper leagues, LeVert is struggling badly from the field with just 36.8 percent of his shots going in so far, marked by shooting 19.3 percent from beyond. But I also see him shooting 4.3 3-pointers and playing 28.4 minutes, evidence a positive correction could be on the way for his shooting and scoring rates. More than anything, I think LeVert is a talented prospect and could eventually find his stride on this fast-paced and fantasy-friendly Nets scheme.

The Bucs parted ways with a talented but troubled player who was in the final year of his contract and unlikely to remain in Tampa after free agency. The Patriots’ pass coverage ranked No. 30 in the NFL at the time, and their secondary had been crushed by injuries. Talib helped the Patriots to a division title in 2012 and earned 2013 Pro Bowl honors after signing a one-year contract to remain with the team. He moved on to the Denver Broncos in 2014. The Buccaneers used the fourth-round pick to draft defensive lineman William Gholston, who remains a part-time starter.

The Vikings opened up their stadium to enjoy a 43-degree day against the Packers

U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, is an indoor venue aimed at keeping out Minneapolis’ frigid winters. However, the arena also has ways to connect with the great outdoors on warm days. Massive bay doors can be opened up to allow breezes to flood the stadium and provide a little taste of Minnesota’s nicest days on the field.

Roethlisberger said Tuesday on 93.7 The Fan that Bryant has not asked for a trade based on their talks together. On Sunday, however, ESPN confirmed a report by NFL Network that Bryant had requested a trade recently.

“There haven’t been any inklings of unhappiness,” Roethlisberger said during his weekly radio appearance.

Addressing the media Tuesday at the Steelers facility, Tomlin said he had no reaction to the storyline, which is a “nonissue to us.”

Tomlin was asked what Bryant has told him about his role in the offense. Tomlin said Bryant hasn’t detailed a desired role.

He was the league-leader in punt return yards and 10th in kick return yards. He was tied for the league lead with two kick or punt return touchdowns. His 143 punt return yards in week 2 was his 2nd most ever. His 219 kick return yards in week 4 was his 2nd most ever.

He was also, allegedly, a wide receiver. After playing corner his rookie year, Hester switched to offense over the summer. But to that point, he’d had one pass thrown his way, without a catch.

This year the turnover ratio is 0 through four games — and that includes unforced errors by backup quarterbacks — and the secondary has produced six interceptions.falcons_027

That’s when Fournier hit the first of three big shots, a 3-pointer for a 108-103 lead.

Fournier stalled the Heat’s rally by scoring seven points in the final 2:27, including a driving basket with 30 seconds left. The Heat trailed by 17 early in the fourth quarter but cut the deficit to two with 2:39 to play.

That’s when Fournier hit the first of three big shots, a 3-pointer for a 108-103 lead.

Hassan Whiteside keyed the Heat’s comeback and finished with 26 points and 22 rebounds. Goran Dragic had 17 points and six assists.

Whiteside sparked the Heat with eight straight points, including a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to nine with 6:08 remaining. Dragic made it 105-103 with two free throws before Fournier’s 3.

Kansas City is a 3-point road favorite in Oakland at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Since Nov. 15, 2015, the Chiefs are 12-0 SU and 9-3 ATS in 12 games against division rivals in the AFC West.

What does this mean for the Raiders? It depends on how long Carr is out. Carr was sidelined last year after suffering a fractured tibula in Week 16, and Matt McGloin and Connor Cook weren’t able to do enough to prevent an immediate playoff exit with a 27-14 loss to the Texans. Oakland lost both games that Carr missed last year.

Now EJ Manuel will take Carr’s place. Manuel entered the game on Sunday when Carr was injured and he completed 11 of 17 passes for 106 yards and one interception.

Del Rio was pleased with Manuel’s performance. Coach Dirk Koetter said Winston is more day-to-day than week-to-week. “The way I understand it — he will be cleared medically to play,” Koetter said. “I know Jameis can handle a lot of pain. That’s not going to be an issue. I think it will be more [about] does Jameis feel like he can play at the level he needs to play at?” — Jenna Laine

Nashville scored first in the second period, too.

“We’ve got a shot now,” said New York manager Joe Girardi, harshly criticized for his Game 2 decisions. “So it’s a totally different feeling than it was the other day, and these guys have picked me up.”

Hartnell beat Elliott with a slap shot off the rebound of teammate Pontus Aberg’s shot at 3:08 for a 2-0 lead. Mattias Ekholm skated across the crease, and his backhand shot went off Elliott to Bonino, who easily tapped the puck in for a 3-0 lead and his first goal since leaving Pittsburgh for Nashville this offseason .

Then the Flyers turned the celebration into a game. McDonald scored his first goal on a slap shot at 10:19, and Patrick, the second overall pick in the June draft, got his first career goal 16 seconds later on a wrister. Philadelphia took advantage of its third power play in the period when Filppula scored on a wrister at 15:05, tying it at 3.

Normally this would be the point that the Jets are sent plunging back to earth by their tormentors. The Patriots, however, are certifiably dreadful on defense right now (last in the NFL by a scandalous 50 yards a game). Josh McCown has done well against similarly bad defenses (the Browns, for example). Doing that and outselling Tom Brady, though, are separate challenges.

The NFL is also expected to soon announce support for a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill in the U.S. Senate. That anticipated announcement comes after Goodell listened to a number of players who spoke with him about criminal justice reform.steelers_015

The above statement seems like an obvious thing.

The above statement seems like an obvious thing. Hopkins is one of the best receivers in the NFL today, and that’s not up for debate — but hear me out.

Hopkins does a great job of getting open, even when he might not be open. Numerous times in the Texans’ game Thursday night, he forced himself off defensive backs to get open for Watson. Eventually he was called for pass interference in the fourth quarter, but it made a big difference.

On this play, you can see Bengals corner Darqueze Dennard nearly falling to his feet because of the spacing that Hopkins created:

The offensive tackle was a project when he came into the NFL, but now he’s in year three and things look worse than ever. Manning was sacked five times by the Lions — three of those came because Ansah destroyed Flowers.

The Giants fans let him hear it — thumbs down and all — when he elected to run out the clock instead of attempt to score before halftime. Then again when he waffled on a decision to go for it on fourth down near the goal line and the team got a delay-of-game penalty.

He didn’t roll the dice on fourth down until it was too late, and it didn’t work out for the Giants anyway.

The Bears signed the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback to a three-year, $45 million contract, but the deal is easy to part with after the 2017 season. That looks like good news for Chicago, because he’s playing far below the $16 million cap hit he’d be due in 2018 if the Bears keep him beyond this season.

After an uninspiring, but decent showing against the Atlanta Falcons — when a pair of drops in the final seconds kept Glennon from being a Week 1 hero — an implosion for the quarterback in Week 2 buried the Bears.

Cowboys telethon raises more than $2 million for Hurricane Harvey victims

The Cowboys and Texans canceled their final preseason game Thursday as the city of Houston continues to deal with the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.

While Texans players spent Thursday with their families and tried to help clean up their city, the Cowboys held a telethon to raise money to assist hurricane victims.

Current and former Cowboys players, coaches and other staff manned the phones for 90 minutes Thursday and raised $2 million for the Salvation Army to assist in hurricane relief efforts.

Thursday’s game was originally scheduled to be played at Houston’s NRG Stadium, but was moved to AT&T Stadium in Arlington before the decision was made Wednesday to cancel the game. About 40,000 tickets had been solid for the game, but ticket buyers could choose to either take a refund or have the cost of the tickets donated to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

The Texans’ quarterbacks didn’t get much help from the offensive line, which allowed 10 sacks, six of which came in the first half. Jaguars DE Calais Campbell, playing in his first game with the team after signing in free agency, had 3.5 of those first-half sacks, which set the Jacksonville franchise record for sacks in a game. Campbell finished with four sacks.

The Texans named Savage the starter early in the offseason, and O’Brien stuck by that even after the team traded up in the first round to draft Watson. Savage outplayed Watson during training camp and the preseason, and O’Brien reiterated that Savage was his starting quarterback.

Quarterback wasn’t the only concern for Houston. Linebacker Brian Cushing, tight ends Ryan Griffin and C.J. Fiedorowicz and wide receiver Bruce Ellington all left the game with concussions.
